Programming
The Whitnall School District provides programming options to meet the needs of gifted and talented students. We do not provide a standalone program.
Gifted and talented programming refers to specialized educational services, opportunities, and support designed to meet the unique academic, social, and emotional needs of gifted and talented students. Programming is tailored to challenge and nurture the abilities of students who demonstrate exceptional aptitude, creativity, or talent in one or more areas. It is important to remember that every child is unique; thus, not every opportunity or strategy is appropriate for every student. A team of education professionals (teachers, pupil services, instructional coaches, administration) in partnership with a student’s family make programming decisions.
Gifted and talented programming emphasizes differentiated instruction, which involves tailoring learning experiences to match the individual needs, interests, and abilities of gifted students. This may include acceleration, enrichment activities, compacting curriculum, independent study projects, and mentorship opportunities. Specific grouping strategies will also be used to maximize the differentiation strategies.
Gifted and talented programming often offer advanced and enriched curriculum options that go beyond the standard grade-level content. This programming provides opportunities for gifted students to delve deeper into topics, explore interdisciplinary connections, and engage in complex, challenging learning experiences that stimulate their intellectual growth.
Gifted and talented programming may include a variety of enrichment opportunities such as competitions, clubs, workshops, seminars, field trips, internships, and partnerships with universities or industry professionals. These enrichment activities expose gifted students to new ideas, experiences, and challenges that broaden their horizons and foster their talents.
Gifted and talented programming recognizes the social and emotional needs of gifted students, who may experience perfectionism, intensities, asynchronous development, and feelings of isolation due to their advanced abilities. Programming provides support services, counseling, peer group interactions, and mentorship to help gifted students navigate their unique challenges and thrive academically and emotionally.
Overall, gifted and talented programming aims to create a stimulating, challenging, and supportive learning environment that cultivates the potential, talents, and passions of gifted students, preparing them for academic success, personal fulfillment, and contributions to society.
