TRANSPORTATION

The Whitnall School District provides bus transportation for all resident students in grades K5-12 who live 2 or more miles from school. Students who live less than 2 miles from school are in the walk zone and do not receive bus services, unless stated in their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Additionally, students in K5-12 who live in areas considered unusually hazardous by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department will receive bus service. 

Please reference the map below to determine if you will no longer be receiving transportation services. 

Key: 

• Blue: No Transportation Services for grades 6-12
• Yellow: No Transportation Services for EES grades K-5
• Grey: No Transportation Services for HCE grades K-5

An unusually hazardous area refers to specific locations along a student's walking route where there are identified safety concerns that make it dangerous for students to walk. These hazards  could include busy intersections, high traffic areas, railroad tracks, or locations without adequate pedestrian infrastructure like sidewalks or crossings. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department evaluates these areas to help determine where transportation may be required to ensure student safety.

1. West Layton Avenue between the Rock Freeway and Highway 100-any K-5 student who must cross West Layton Avenue between the Rock Freeway and Highway 100 in either direction to attend school or who must walk along West Layton Avenue between the Rock Freeway and Highway 100 in either direction to attend school. Please see #4 below. 
2. West Edgerton Avenue between 108th Street and 124th Street- any K-5 Student who must walk along West Edgerton Avenue between South 108th Street and South 124th Street to attend school. 
3. West Grange Avenue- any K-5 student, for houses whose driveway entrance is located on Grange Avenue, and must walk along in either direction from 111St Street to 116th Street only. 
4. West Janesville Road- any K-5 student who must walk only along in either direction from South 116th Street to South 124th Street on the north side of the street, and South 111th Street to South 114th Street & South 118th Street to South 124th Street on the south side of the street. 

• No crossing Layton Avenue 
• No walking along Edgerton Avenue where no sidewalks are present
• No walking along Cold Spring Road  
• No walking along North side of Grange Avenue 
• No walking along the East side of 124st Street 

1. Highway 100- any K-8 student who must cross or walk along Hwy 100 to attend their school. 
2. Beloit Road- any K-8 student who must cross, not walk along Beloit road to attend their school. 
3. Highway 100 (Forest Home Avenue)- any K-8 student who must cross or walk along the highway south of a point 100 feet south of teh junction of Carroll Circle and Highway 100 & the southern boundary of the District to attend their school. 
4. West Layton Avenue between the Rock Freeway and Highway 100- any K-8 student who must cross West Layton Avenue between the Rock Freeway and Highway 100 in either direction to attend school. 
5. West Forest Home Avenue- any K-8 student who has no other option but to cross or walk along West Forest Home Avenue in either direction from South 108th Street to South 84th Street to attend their school. 
6. Coldspring Road- any K-8 student who must walk along Coldspring Road in either direction from 124th Street to 92nd Street to attend their school. 

• No students to cross Highway 100
• No students to cross Beloit Road 
• No walking along or crossing West Forest Home Avenue from junction of Carroll Circle & Hwy OO to the Southern boundary of the District 
• No crossing or walking along West Forest Home Avenue, where sidewalks are not present from South 84th Street to Highway 100
• No walking along Janesville Road where sidewalks are not present 

Families with students that are not eligible for district-provided transportation have the opportunity to purchase transportation services through the District Office each semester if there is space available on the Whitnall School bus and if there is already an active route in the area. These services are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and the price is set by the School Board using a formula from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. 

Please note that transportation services will not be sold if the bus capacity is exceeded. Additionally, if families choose this option, they are responsible for ensuring that their student reaches the active route. The District is not able to reroute our transportation lines to accommodate parent-paid transportation.

Services are typically available for purchase in early August, depending on the Board meeting schedules. 

The Whitnall School District works with First Student to provide transportation. All families must complete the mandatory Online Registration to accept or decline bus service. Bus stops will be assigned in mid-August, and parents will be notified via the Infinite Campus parent portal once route information is finalized. To receive important updates and view bus routes, please make sure you have an active Infinite Campus account before school starts. 

New students, including K5 or new residents, will sign up for busing during the enrollment process. They will receive an Infinite Campus activation key, and instructions for setting up an IC account are on the District website. Please note that bus routing information will appear in Infinite Campus 3 days after enrollment. 

Bus routes are managed in a combined effort with First Student and the District and are designed to drop students off at corners or intersections to keep bus rides as short as possible. Routes are determined by area, number and location of students, and route length. 

All regular education students are assigned to a shared bus stop with other students in the area. Home stops are not allowed unless special circumstances apply (such as IEP requirements.) 

For K5 students, parents or an assigned designee must be at the bus stop for both AM pick-up and PM drop-off. If there is no designee or parent at the stop in the afternoon, the child will not be released from the bus

In accordance with state law, open enrollment students are responsible for their own transportation.
