SECTION 504
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Administered by the U. S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights. The purpose of a 504 is to remove barriers to learning by providing reasonable accommodations in a general education classroom for students who have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity. Parent(s)/guardian(s) may request a 504 evaluation to determine if their child will qualify for an accommodation plan. Section 504 regulatory provision 34 C.F.R. § 104.35(c) outlines the placement and evaluation requirements for students with disabilities in public elementary and secondary education programs. Section 504 evaluations are comprehensive and require schools to draw evaluation data from a variety of sources to minimize the possibility of error and ensure appropriate placement. The information obtained from all such sources must be documented and all significant factors related to the student's learning process must be considered.
