6th Grade

     BAND - In the 6th grade band, students will continue to work towards mastering playing skills such as tuning, articulation, fingerings, and major scales.  Students' skill levels will be assessed in a half-hour weekly pullout lesson.  A wide variety of repertoire will be learned.  There will be three performances during the school year.  Students will be expected to participate in all three performances.  In order to achieve the highest level of success on their chosen instrument, students will be expected to participate in the 6th grade band for the entire school year.

     CHOIR - Choir class is a performance emphasis class.  Students will study a variety of musical styles, vocal techniques and tone production, as basic music theory and notation.  This ensemble performs two required evening concerts during the school year.  All choir students are required to attend these performances and come dressed in appropriate concert attire as part of their quarter grade.  The choir occasionally performs during the school day for the student body as well as the community.  Choir students will also have the opportunity to elect to take pullout voice lessons during the school day.  Students can enroll in lessons at the beginning of the semester.

     ORCHESTRA - In the string orchestra students will continue to work towards mastering string skills such as tuning, shifting, first and second position, and major scales.  A wide variety of repertoire will be learned.  There will be three performances during the school year.  Students will be expected to participate in all three performances.  In order to achieve the highest level of success on their string instruments, students will be expected to participate in the 6th grade orchestra the entire school year.

     BAND - In the 8th grade band, students will continue to work towards mastering advanced playing skills such as sight reading, tuning, articulation, technique, major, chromatic scales, and arpeggios.  Student's skill levels will be assessed in a half-hour weekly pullout lesson.  A wide variety of repertoire will be learned.  There will be three performances during the school year.  Students will be expected to participate in all three performances.  In order to achieve the highest level of success on their chosen instrument, students will be expected to participate in the 8th grade band for the entire school year.

     MIE (Music In Education) - This course is designed to emphasize the study of music, and provides continual opportunities for students' experience and achievement as individuals and as a group.  The curriculum strengthens the ability of all students, not to only learn about music, but even more importantly, to learn how to make and create music.
