6th Grade

This class is a required course exploring various art forms and techniques in both the 2D and 3D techniques.  2D art will provide study in drawing, painting, printmaking, and collage using different mediums.  3D art will include construction in multiple mediums such as clay, plaster, wood, plaster craft and paper mache. All work will incorporate related art history in its creation.  The students will also learn how to critique and evaluate their own work and how to appreciate the differing styles and techniques of professional artists, as well as their own.

7th Grade

Students may only select one of the two art classes.
2-D ART - This course is for students interested in expanding their knowledge and skills for creating 2-dimensional art.  The curriculum offers in-depth instruction in the areas of drawing, painting, printmaking, and collage through use of a wide variety of tools, materials, and techniques.  Art appreciation, art history, multi-cultural art and art careers and their role in the making of 2-D art will also be explored.

3-D ART This course provides students with opportunities to explore 3 dimensional art in depth.  It is designed to enhance their awareness and understanding of sculpture from a historic and cultural perspective as well as further develop their ability to construct 3-D forms that are creative, expressive, and well crafted.  Areas that will be investigated are additive sculpture (a process of construction in which the materials are cut or shaped or formed, and bound together with appropriate materials.  This is also the building up of a form from material such as clay and adding or shaping the material), reductive sculpture (a process in which material such as wood or plaster, is carved or chipped away until the desired form emerges), art appreciation, art history, multi-cultural art, and 3-D art related careers.

CERAMICS - Students are provided with opportunities to further develop their artistic ability, aesthetic awareness, knowledge and creativity through participation in a variety of activities that incorporate simple as well as more complex ceramic techniques.  Works will include some not so common techniques such as mold making and jewelry.  Pottery and sculpture are integral components of this class.  An investigation of art heritage and diverse cultures, past and present is also integrated into this program.

WEARABLE ART WITH EMPHASIS ON JEWELRY - This course provides students with activities designed to enhance their awareness and understanding of artwork that can be worn, from a historic and cultural perspective as well as further develop art forms of their own that are creative, expressive and well crafted. Students will use a variety of tools, materials and techniques in their exploration and creation.

FIBER ARTS - In this class, students will explore various techniques in paper making, vessels, sculpture, book making, weaving, sculpture, and objects made from natural or man-made fibers.  Traditional and non-traditional techniques will be taught.  Many of the creations will be based on multi-cultural methods such as surface design and construction using hand made tools.  Nature based activities and recycling are also incorporated.
