The elementary guidance program offers developmental classes for all grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Along with the in-class sessions of developmental guidance, we also offer small and individual groups on an as needed basis. Parental involvement is welcomed and encouraged.

CAREER FAIR 2010

Fifth grade classes started a unit on career exploration right after the Thanksgiving break. Students have completed an interest inventory and discussed careers that matched their interests. We discussed different levels of education needed for various careers as well as the importance of knowing themselves when considering careers.

On Tuesday, January 11, 2011, we held our annual Career Fair. Parents of the 5th graders made career presentations to each class. The 2011 Career Fair presenters included: Mr. Cory Conway, Cable/Telecommunications and the Fire Department, Ms. Julie Soczka, Information Technology, Mr. Nick Stachula, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, Mr. Steve Clark, Manufacturing/Engineering, Ms. Lisa Guglielmi, Zoo Keeping, Ms. Nadine Dentice, Marketing, Business Ownership and Technology and Ms. Carla Miller, Court Reporting. I would like to extend a big thank you to all of our presenters. Their presentations were informative and entertaining.

Currently, 5th grade students are working on developing a Learner Resume. The goal of the 5th grade career unit is to have students start thinking about career goals and to expose them to multiple career opportunities. We also hope to help them realize that what they are learning now will be important to their future success.

SERVICE LEARNING

As part of the 5th grade Guidance Program, students participate in a career unit. This guidance program includes a discussion on the importance of service learning. By providing service to others, students not only help others, but also learn about personal interests and skills that may benefit them in a future career.

On Thursday, January 6, 2011, the 5th grade students experienced a unique opportunity, as part of the 5th grade Guidance Program. The 5th grade students heard a presentation by former HCE student, Adam Nagy, on the importance and benefits of service learning. Currently, Adam is serving in Kampala, Uganda with the Soccer Without Borders program. Adam started with this program in August and will continue his service learning experience for ten months. Adam discussed the importance of service learning and the unique experiences he has had while participating in this program. We would like to thank Adam for his interesting and engaging presentation.

DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)

The Guidance Department also works with the Hales Corners Police Department to provide a D.A.R.E. Program in 5th grade.  "This program is a highly acclaimed program that gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and has proven so successful that it is now being implemented in 75 percent of our nation's school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world. D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives."
