We are going places in Third Grade! The third grade field trips are planned to enhance the curriculum. This year, the students will be taking five field trips.
FIRST FIELD TRIP: Mrs. Peters, the music teacher, arranged for the children to hear the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra play on October 19th. An important part of the music curriculum is learning about and identifying musical instruments. In science the students learn about sound and apply their knowledge to design an instrument.
SECOND FIELD TRIP: On January 29, the classes visited the Milwaukee Art Museum for a tour called "Storytelling in Art." Docents worked with small groups of children. Through observation and discussion of selected paintings the students constructed stories based on story elements such as characters and setting.
THIRD FIELD TRIP: Each year an important part of our literature study is attending a play. First Stage presented "Bunnicula." The students listened to the story in our classrooms as a read aloud in preparation for the lively play that included music and humor.
FOURTH FIELD TRIP: Another unit of study in thrid grade is our Solar System Unit. In conjunction with this unit, the students will be traveling to the planetarium housed in the Wauwatosa East High School.
FIFTH FIELD TRIP: Our science study of Rocks and Minerals is a favorite of many students. The visit to the Halquist Quarry takes place in late spring. First, the groups view the quarry and then a guide speaks to the students about geology. The highlight of the visit is being allowed to collect 12 rock specimens from the bins of stones that are commercially available from Halquist.
Special thanks to Hales Corners PTO for their help defraying the cost of field trips by annually donating $5.00 per student toward the cost of buses.
