Fourth grade is a fun place to be at Edgerton Elementary! Here are a few highlights from fourth grade...
Science
The children started the year by putting on their scientific minds and studying three different critters. They learned about aquatic frogs, fiddler crabs and millipedes in our Animal Studies Unit. The children learned how to create a healthy habitat and used their observation skills to carefully examine the behaviors of these animals. They are currently studying electrical circuits and will have a visit from WE Energies, who will present information about electrical safety. This spring, the students will learn about human body systems and how to make good choices to keep themselves healthy. As the year ends, we will study land and water and visit Grant Park.
Social Studies
Throughout the entire school year, the fourth grade will be learning about the regions of the United States. They will spend extra time with the Midwest region. They will also study Wisconsin using the Great State Wisconsin Newspaper. This newpaper provides interesting information about Wisconsin geography, history, industry and people. Early in the year, we visited the Shalom Wildlife Sanctuary to learn about the first Wisconsinites, the Native Americans. We plan to make homemade paper and candles. Learning about many of Wisconsin's agricultural products is a tasty part of our curriculum. As the year comes to a close, they will also be studying Wisconsin government and will take a trip to Madison to learn more about our beautiful state capitol.
Math
Every day is a step in our mathematical journey. Throughout the year fourth graders will be working hard at memorizing all of their basic facts, computation, decimals, measurement, estimation, fractions, geometry and problem solving.
Reading and Writing
Our fourth graders are excellent readers and writers. Throughout the year, students will be reading, discussing, and responding to books of all genres. Reading is an important part of our school day, and reading daily at home is important as well. We love books! Using the Writer's Workshop model, we incorporate the six traits of good writing: ideas, organization, word choice, sentence fluency, voice, and conventions. Our students have written many stories, poems and reports that have lined our halls and filled our classrooms. Make sure you stop to read them!
