The Whitnall School District has school nursing services to oversee and assist in providing a safe and healthy educational environment in our schools. The nurse also provides assistance with the review and creation of various School Board policies related to health in our schools.

Each school has identified procedures for attending to students who incur an accident, are injured, or become ill while attending school. The District has identified procedures and guidelines in the event of an accident involving a student at school or while the student is under the jurisdiction of school authorities.

To improve student health and regular school attendance, it may be advisable to administer medication or render limited medical care to students during the school day. School Board policy # 453.4 Administration of Medication to Students and #453.4R Procedures defines guidelines for the District's responsibility to administer medication or medical care. The form may be downloaded under Helpful Links below. Parents need to fill out the Dispensing Medication Authorization Form if they need medicine to be given to their child during school hours.

The health of all Whitnall students is a concern of the District. The state mandates that schools report suspected cases of child abuse. This includes suspected physical, emotional or pornographic abuse of youngsters. The schools are also mandated to permit the local Child Protective Service Agency to interview, in the schools, alleged victims of child abuse. School Boardpolicy #454 Reporting Child Abuse/Neglect and procedure#454R details this information.

The District recognizes its responsibility to provide for a safe school environment for students and employees that include provisions to protect their health from communicable diseases. School Board policy #453.3 Communicable Diseases discusses District guidelines. The District also has a policy # 453.31 Pediculosis (Head Lice).

All school age children must have a record of immunizations on file with the School District per state and federal guidelines. Children with incomplete immunization records will not be permitted to enter school. Specific information is found in School Board policy #453.2 Student Immunizations. Children new to the District must have their immunization records reviewed by school officials prior to the start of school. Persons who have medical or religious objections to these immunizations should contact the School District nurse, Sue Larson, to complete a state required waiver.
